After my toddler grandson suffered a traumatic brain injury my focus on his recovery and rehabilitation became paramount. Learning about neuroplasticity - the ability of the brain to rewire itself - is an amazing process. However I never expected to acquire a brain injury while I was working on this body of work but I have. I became critically ill in February of 2009 and complications led me to experience a hypoxic brain injury.
I have been in grad school working on my MFA in Printmaking since 2005 and was set to graduate in December of 2009 however this has changed. I am on medical leave and in nuero rehabilitation. I have been doing all I can do to re-train myself with all the information and technical skills I had learned since 2005. I plan to resume my degree ...I hope In Feb. of 2010. Currently I am painting. I plan to recapture every skill and create systems to sequence my tasks accordingly(lots of signs and notepads)
Bypassing damaged areas of the brain along with
repetition, new outcomes intertwine forming new circuitry. Although we can't see
the actual reconstruction, we can see the benefits and miracles of this natural
phenomenon in each relearned task
I am currently working on paintings of nature-the elements while recovering & I am will resume working on the body of work for my thesis MFA in printmaking at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. The thesis is based on my interpretation of "Rewiring The Brain" consisting of a series of 5 prints editioned at 20 and 12 small scale metal sculptures that have printmaking elements.
